Gamers: The Real Winners of the COVID-19 Outbreak?

Remember a time when people used to make fun of gamers for playing video games, being shut-ins and avoiding any social interactions? Well, look who's the winner now.

With the highly contagious coronavirus spreading like wildfire throughout the globe, governments across the world have ordered complete lockdown in their respective countries. People are being forced to stay inside their houses and avoid any social gatherings to prevent spreading of the pandemic. As a result, everyone is making several drastic changes in their lifestyle to cope up with this new form of living till the disease is eradicated or a cure is found.

But guess who's least affected by this worldwide curfew? That's right, the gamers of course.

Gamers and streamers are having the time of their lives and are not only least bothered by the disease but they also have to make little to no changes in their lifestyle. More and more people are being forced to stay indoors resulting in most games reaching unforeseen concurrent player counts, which is evident from the steam charts themselves.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive, a game that has been out for 8 years reached 1 million peak players for the first time this month. DotA2, another major title in esports by Valve also reached 700,000 players for the first time in several months.

Streamers too, are having a wonderful time amidst the crisis. The viewership on services like YouTube Gaming increased by a whopping 15 percent over the past couple days followed by Twitch at an increase of about 10 percent. DotA2 also reached 10 million followers on Twitch this week. Streaming is certainly in its prime right now and if you're planning to pick up on streaming, now might be a very good time to do so.

As a result of the virus, people are choosing to stay indoors, play games, watch streams and have a quality time at home. Still, at the end of the day it is impossible to predict how devastating will this virus be and how far-reaching its consequences might get. While gaming and streaming are at their peak now, if the pandemic situation takes a turn for worse, both of these might be short-lived. The future of humanity is uncertain, and we'd advice our readers to take extra precautions in a time of crisis such as this.
